National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) was established in 1961, by Government of India as an autonomous organization to assist and advise the governments at the Centre and in States in the implementation of their policies for education, especially to bring about qualitative changes in school education and teacher preparation.
The Council from then has established National Institute of Education at New Delhi, Five Regional Institutes of Education at Mysuru, Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Shillong, Central Institute of Educational Technology at New Delhi and Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education at Bhopal.
The Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru was established in August, 1963 to cater to the needs of Southern States which at present include Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and the Union Territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep. During more than half a decade, the Institute has rendered invaluable service to the nation in general and southern states in particular and has evolved into a unique organization, with its increasing range of activities that has influenced school education and teacher preparation in South India. Recognising its contributions, the RIE, Mysuru has been sanctioned the Inter-University Centre for Teacher Education (IUCTE) by the Department of Higher Education, MHRD in December 2017. The IUCTE will cover all Schools of Education and Departments of Education in the Southern Region and make every effort to network and strengthen them for quality improvement in teacher and school education.
Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru currently offers six programmes including the Ph.D. programme. The Demonstration Multipurpose School is also an integral part of the Institute and serves as a laboratory of the Institute for carrying out action research, practice teaching, experimentation and innovation in school education. The institute is located on a sprawling, picturesque, 124 acre campus and has an excellent ambience for higher studies, research and extension activities. The institute is well equipped with modern infrastructure in tune with the requirements of the changing world. We have students from different parts of the country pursuing different courses and they live together as one community. This is indeed a wonderful opportunity to experience multiculturalism in its true sense and feel the unity in diversity leading to national integration.
